The final concerts of the BBC Proms will not go ahead this evening or tomorrow, following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022.

A statement from the BBC Proms read, ’Following the very sad news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen, as a mark of respect we will not be going ahead with Prom 71 on Friday 9 September, or the Last Night of the Proms on Saturday 10 September.’

Violinist Lisa Batiashvili was due to perform at tonight’s prom with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Batiashvili joined the crowds of mourners who gathered outside Buckingham Palace yesterday after the announcement of the Queen’s death.

Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason was due to perform in the Last Night of the Proms, with Lise Davidsen and Dalia Stasevska.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday at the age of 96, surrounded by family members at Balmoral. She is the longest reigning monarch in British history, serving 70 years on the throne and celebrated her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year.

The Queen will lie in state in Edinburgh and Westminster as part of ten days of national mourning starting today.
