Harlem Renaissance poetry takes centre stage in a new chamber work

‘I was on a journey of discovering female poets of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, and as I was going through different texts, the theme of nature stood out,’ US composer and vocalist Tamar-kali says about her new composition for soprano and string quartet, Pleasure Garden. ‘I was also doing research on pleasure gardens, and in that time African Americans weren’t allowed in them, so they created their own spaces for leisure and gathering. That’s the premise of this work.’…
