A new string quartet full of rhythms and grooves

US composer Baldwin Giang’s new string quartet is part of a larger series of pieces for which the composer interviewed and collaborated with residents and staff of a transitional housing programme in Louisville, KY, US. The quartet was inspired by one of these interviews. ‘Ritchie, who was previously homeless, was one of the programme’s success stories,’ says Giang. ‘He told me about a motorbike he had built during his time there, a symbol of his personal growth enabled by the programme’s support. At one point he said: “Before, I couldn’t go nowhere. Now, I’m moving.”’ Giang’s piece is titled after the latter sentence…
