After studying in Australia and his native Amsterdam, Boersma joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Returning to Australia, he was a founding member of experimental new music group Elision and later became principal double bassist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, a position he still holds.

Alongside his work at the Sydney Conservatorium, Boersma is double bass tutor for the Australian Youth Orchestra.
