Stutter Step, a new work for piano trio by Australian-American composer Jack Frerer, performed here by Kevin Zhu, Philip Sheegog and Tengku Irfan.

Frerer says about the piece: ’Most of my music operates by presenting simple, memorable musical ideas, and then finding the most interesting ways to mess with them. I connect with pieces that aren’t necessarily about musical material itself, but rather the manner in which material is manipulated. In Stutter Step, the introductory material gradually experiences interruptions, stutters which inhibit the momentum of the music until it’s broken down into its elements. The piece then attempts to reconstruct its parts, gradually recalling themes from the beginning of the work and trying to return to its previous state of clarity and simplicity.’
