The Music Institute of Chicago has appointed Venezuelan cellist Horacio Contreras to the faculty of its Community Music School and Academy programme for gifted pre-college students.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Dr Contreras has taught at The Juilliard School, Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, University of Michigan and Il Sistema’s Latin-American Cello Academy.

'Horacio is a master teacher with the skills to teach a wide range of students, from intermediate to advanced,' said Music Institute president and CEO Mark George. 'I have seen students progress very quickly under his tutelage. He truly has emerged as one of the best teachers of his generation.'

'It is an honor to join the faculty of such a wonderful institution,' said Contreras. 'Teaching is my passion, and I do it to give back all of the wonderful things I have received from life and music.'
