US violist Matthew McDowell will join the group

US violist Matthew McDowell has been named as the new violist of the Schumann String Quartet. The group said on social media:
’As we continue our journey together, we look forward not only to the inspiration, artistry, and energy he [Matthew McDowell] brings, but also to many shared laughs, memorable moments, and new musical horizons along the way.
’With great anticipation, we embark on this next chapter together.’
McDowell is an alumnus of Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, the International Menuhin Music Academy and Yale University. He has studied under Ettore Causa, Ivan Vukčević, Miguel da Silva, Boris Abramov and Gérard Caussé.
He has attended and performed at festivals and programmes including the Verbier Festival Soloist Academy, Gstaad Menuhin Festival, YellowBarn Festival, Prussia Cove IMS, Festival Pablo Casals, Moritzburg Festival, among others. As a chamber musician he has collaborated with musicians such as Martha Argerich, Gary Hoffman, Yura Lee, Miguel da Silva, Stella Chen, Ivan Monighetti, Tai Murray, Sergey Ostrovsky, Renaud Capuçon and others.
In addition to McDowell, the Schumann String Quartet comprises violinists Erik Schumann and Ken Schumann, and cellist Mark Schumann. They have undertaken a residency at London’s Wigmore Hall and performed at festivals including the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam, Schleswig Holstein Music Festival and MDR Musiksommer.
