The US cellist will receive comprehensive professional guidance from the boutique artist management firm

US cellist Joshua Roman has signed to the Cliburn Agency for general management. An Oklahoma native, Roman studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Richard Aaron and Desmond Hoebig, former principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra.
He was appointed principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 2006 at the age of 22, becoming the youngest principal player in the orchestra’s history.
He has performed with leading US and international orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, New World Symphony, Toronto Symphony and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
He is noted for his wide-ranging collaborations with such luminaries as Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, as well as TED talks and peformances.
Roman plays an 1830 Giovanni Francesco Pressenda instrument on a generous loan through The Stradivari Society of Chicago.
In 2024 Roman released his solo debut album, Immunity, which features music ranging from Bach to works by George Crumb and Caroline Shaw as well as his own compositions. The album was directly inspired by Roman’s personal ongoing experience with Long Covid.
He subsequently took the Immunity project on tour as a blend of music, storytelling and audience interaction to Long Covid clinics around the US.
The Cliburn Agency was set up in 2024 as a boutique firm to offer artists comprehensive general management as well as publicity and branding services.
Of his signing, Roman commented, ‘The Cliburn Agency is built on a living legacy; one of artistry, bold tradition, and music’s power to connect across boundaries. To join in this endeavour at this point in my career is deeply meaningful.
’At the heart of my work is the love of people, and of course, the cello. I could not be more thrilled for this alignment, which opens new paths to explore together the transformative role music plays in our lives.’
Cliburn president and CEO Jacques Marquis said: ‘We at the Cliburn feel fortunate to enter into this new journey with Joshua Roman. He represents so many things at the heart of the Cliburn: excellent musicianship, a unique voice, devotion to presenting classical music in new ways, accessibility to new audiences.’
