A booklet of Mozart sonatas was withdrawn from auction after a
claim that it was donated to a charity shop 'in error'. The first
edition of the Sonatas for Keyboard and Violin K10–15, dating from
1765, had been expected to fetch up to £3,000 in the sale at
Sotheby's in London on 8 June.
A volunteer at the Oxfam music shop in Reading found the rare
booklet in a box of donated sheet music, but a spokesperson for the
charity said that a woman had come forward claiming that the music
was donated 'by mistake'. Oxfam withdrew the sonatas from auction
pending an investigation of the claim. According to the
spokesperson, the charity has an informal goodwill agreement with
donors that if they want an item back that they have donated, the
charity will return it.
