The 25-year-old musician receives a cash prize and a concert engagement with Orchestra Wellington

Singapore violinist Jun Hong Loh has won first prize at the Gisborne International Music Competition in New Zealand. The 25-year-old receives NZ$9,000 (£3,950) and a solo performance with Orchestra Wellington in 2017.

Second prize, worth NZ$5,000, was won by 16-year-old New Zealand cellist Matthias Balzat, while third prize, worth NZ$3,000, went to 21-year-old Australian saxophonist Mary Osborn.

A graduate of Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory and of the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Glenn Dicterow, Loh currently teaches at Singapore’s School of the Arts and at the Conservatory. He was the winner of the Atlantic Symphony Concerto Competition in Boston in 2013.
