Violinist Alice Schoenfeld has donated $7m to the Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California (USC), reports the Los Angeles Times. The money will establish a new endowment to fund scholarships for string students.

Schoenfeld (pictured) started teaching at USC in 1960 and is currently professor emerita of violin. Last year she donated $3m for a new symphony rehearsal hall, which, like the scholarship fund, is named in honour of her and her late sister, the cellist Eleonore Schoenfeld.
