The cover star of The Strad April 2026 issue, Frank Peter Zimmermann, shares his insights on recording the Elgar Violin Concerto in this exclusive interview.
Zimmermann only the German artist to record the English masterpiece, and has done so with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), conducted by Edward Gardner.
Zimmermann came across the work relatively late in his playing career, aged 32. Since then, he has gone on to perform it numerous times in the last 36 months, including appearances with the Basque National Orchestra, LPO, Boston Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, among others.
This interview was captured by videographer Alexander Barnes of Apple and Biscuit Recordings.
