The first full recording of Sun Rings was released by Nonesuch Records in August.The piece is scored for string quartet, chorus and pre-recorded spacescapes and performed by Kronos with the vocal ensemble Volti. One Earth, One People, One Love features the voices of astronaut Gene Cernan and poet Alice Walker. On Sun Rings, Riley incorporates into his composition ’space sounds’ (plasma waves) that physicist Don Gurnett had collected during NASA probe missions.
The film was commissioned for Kronos by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support was provided by Treatment Studio, London.
Kronos Quartet recently received the Ouevreprijs for career achievement by the Edison Foundation.
