Mozart’s childhood violin and his concert violin will feature in performances from the Bella Musica Pre-College Ensemble of Mozarteum University Salzburg’s upcoming tour to Italy
Two original violins that belonged to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will accompany the Bella Musica Pre-College Ensemble of Mozarteum University Salzburg.
Both Mozart’s childhood violin and his concert violin will be presented and played during the tour’s four performances in Rome in September 2026. The children’s violin was made by the Austrian luthier Andreas Ferdinand Mayr around 1746, while the concert violin was crafted by Pietro Antonio Dalla Costa of Treviso in 1764.
The instruments are part of the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg. They will be heard in performances from 2–6 September, including a concert recording for Vatican Radio in the Vatican Gardens that will be broadcast via the European Broadcasting Union. The ensemble will also be invited to a general audience with Pope Leo XIV.
Founded in 2017, the Bella Musica chamber ensemble of the Pre-College at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg brings together young musical talents aged 10 to 22. Under the artistic direction of Stefan David Hummel, the musicians rehearse works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other composers during the annual orchestra camp and then perform in a European tour. In 2026, the project was included in the Atlas of Good Teaching by the Austrian Federal Ministry.
