On Tuesday 12 May the Royal Albert Hall in London hosted a performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Symphony no.5, with Ray Chen performing as soloist for the concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vasily Petrenko.

The E string on Chen’s violin broke during the vivacious third movement, requiring him to perform technically challenging passages on the instrument belonging to assistant leader Tamás András, while András rapidly changed the string.

Concert attendee Yuki Lin captured the scene as Chen played on the unfamiliar instrument, before being able to switch the instruments back during an orchestral tutti section – just in time for the next solo entry.

The performance was met with thunderous applause.
