Shuhei Lawson assumes the role, having previously served in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) has announced the appointment of Shuhei Lawson as its new assistant principal cello. Prior to this role, Lawson served as tutti cellist in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for two years.
Lawson earned a bachelor of music from Queensland Conservatorium under the tutelage of QSO principal cello, Hyung Suk Bae, before continuing his studies at the Australian National Academy of Music with Howard Penny. He has also been mentored by Simon Cobcroft, Julian Smiles, Meta Wiess, Molly Kadarauch and Li-Wei Qin.
Lawson took part in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra Academy and Pacific Music Festival. In 2025, with the support of the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, he travelled to Japan, Switzerland and Germany to work with cellists including Yoshika Masuda, Kurt Hess and Jan Ickert, as well as Haran Meltzer (Israel Philharmonic), Shizuka Mitsui (Munich Philharmonic) and Anton Spronk (Frankfurt Radio Symphony).
He has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, Orchestra Victoria and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, He has also performed as guest cellist with the Australian Quartet and alongside the Goldner and Orava quartets and toured nationally with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Lawson has served as a guest tutor with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp.
