Christopher Sandberg will begin in the role this August

Swedish violist Christopher Sandberg has been appointed principal violist of Staatskapelle Weimar in Weimar, Germany. He will begin in the role in August 2026. On social media he said of the appointment: 

’I’m looking forward to performing with such a historic ensemble and continuing life in a place that has come to mean so much to me during my studies.’

Originally from Örebro, Sweden, Sandberg has studied in Stockholm, Nuremberg, as well as with Florian Richter at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar. He has appeared frequently as principal violist with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Lübeck Philharmonic Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra and Elbland Philharmonic Orchestra.

He was previously a scholarship holder of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden for two years, performing under Herbert Blomstedt, Daniele Gatti and Christian Thielemann.

As a chamber musician, he has won Mozartverein Nuremberg’s Chamber Music Competition and performed at festivals including the Semperoper’s Chamber Music Series, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Old Ox Music Festival.

In 2022, he made his solo debut on the viola in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, performing with Magdalena Waldauf and the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Mariánské Lázně. As a violin soloist, he has previously appeared with the Örebro Chamber Strings and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
