Marcel Johannes Kits has won the position after passing the trial

Estonian cellist Marcel Johannes Kits has officially become the Munich Philharmonic’s principal cellist after passing his trial.
Kits has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Brussels Philharmonic, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Munich Chamber Orchestra, George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others. He has also played as the guest principal cello in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich and plays regularly in the Estonian Festival Orchestra.
He has given recitals in venues such as Carnegie Hall, St. Petersburg Philharmonia, Moscow Conservatory, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin, Berliner Philharmonie and Boulez Saal. He has also performed at festivals including the Pärnu Music Festival, Young Euro Classic, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Musical Olympus Festival and MustonenFest Tel Aviv. Kits won third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition and first prize at the George Enescu competition.
He is an alumnus of Trossingon University of Music, where he studied with Francis Gouton, and the Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied under Jens Peter Maintz. He has participated in masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Ivan Monighetti, David Geringas, Maria Kliegel, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Wen-Sinn Yang, Jan-Erik Gustafsson, Marko Ylönen and others.
