A collection of several hundred previously unseen photographs of the British cellist Jacqueline du Pré, as well as recordings, personal items and other memorabilia, are to be sold at auction on the instruction of Jacqueline’s brother Piers du Pré and sister Hilary Finzi. 

Part one of the auction takes place on 5 December 2025 and includes, among other items, many unreleased recordings, a collection of du Pré’s concert dresses, four cello bridges and the original certificate for her 1712 ‘Davidov’ Stradivari from W.E Hill and sons, as well her childhood teddy bear.

Part two of the auction, which will take place on 13 March 2026, comprises several hundred photographs taken throughout the cellist’s life, as well as filmed material.

The photos include a collection from du Pré’s time studying with Pablo Casals in Zermatt in 1960 and 1961; Moscow in 1966, where she studied with Mstislav Rostropovich, as well as family photos with her parents and siblings, and from her wedding to Daniel Barenboim.

The auction lot also includes the original print of the photograph that was exclusively featured on the cover The Strad’s January 2025 issue.
