Thirteenth edition of competition kicks off with 49 young violinists in Hungarian virtuoso and teacher’s home town

The 2018 Carl Flesch International Violin Competition has begun in Mosonmagyaróvár, northwestern Hungary, the titular virtuoso and renowned teacher’s home town.

The competition has welcomed 49 young violinists for the preliminary live rounds starting today. Semi-finals will take place on Thursday 7 June and finals on Saturday 9 June.

The competition offers a €5000 first prize, €3000 second and €1500 third, along with a number of special prizes. 

It’s previous winner, in 2013, was Lara Boschkor (pictured) who has gone on to win the Johansen International Competition for Young String Players in Washington DC, the International Queen Sophie Charlotte Violin Competition (Germany) and the Tonali Violin Competition.

The competition jury is chaired by Eszter Perényi, and includes Márta Ábrahám, Jurgis Dvarionas, Frantisek Novotny and Michael Vaiman.
