The Israeli cellist Amit Peled has been given use of Pablo
Casals's c.1700 Matteo Gofriller. Peled played for Casals's widow,
Marta Casals Istomin, over the summer, and has now received the
Gofriller from her and the Casals Foundation.
Casals acquired the Gofriller in 1913. Other cellists to have
played on the instrument since Casals's death in 1973 include Anne
Gastinel and Claudio Bohórquez, who was loaned it between 2000 and
2003 after winning the Casals Competition.
Peled has had a c.1689 Andrea Guarneri on loan since 2005. His
third CD, Reflections, a disc of music by Bach and Bloch,
was released this summer.
