Violinist Vadim Repin discusses vibrato, orchestration and technique in this challenging, passionate work. From June 2017

I started to learn this piece when I was 14 years old – maybe a bit too early in life, because it’s based on a short story all about unhappy love, by Ivan Turgenev (1818–83): Le chant de l’amour triomphant. It couldn’t be more romantic. I tried my best, being so young – sometimes they say you have to experience a feeling in your life in order for it to come through in the music – but I didn’t cut onions to make myself cry or anything like that!
