The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow has appointed Mieko Kanno as its new head of strings. The Japanese-born violinist starts in her new post in January 2013. She is currently head of performance at Durham University and is also a musicologist specialising in contemporary music.

Kanno studied in London at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Yfrah Neaman. While freelancing as a violinist she studied musicology and gained her PhD. She worked at York University and Trinity College of Music before joining the music department at Durham University in 2001.
