Today, 7 October is legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s birthday! To celebrate the occasion, here’s a recent recital of Ma’s from 25 September at an event held by the Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility (GBPSR) and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).

Ma performs a programme of:

Ernest Bloch: Prayer

J.S. Bach: Suite No. 5 C Minor, Prélude

J.S. Bach: Suite No. 3 in C Major, Sarabande

J.S. Bach: Suite No. 3 in C Major, Prélude

Traditional Catalan: Song of the Birds

The annual event addresses the existential threats of nuclear war and climate change, with this year’s event commemorating the founder of the two organisations, Dr. Bernard Lown, who, together with Dr. Evgeny Chazov of the Soviet Union, accepted the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize.

The performance was originally livestreamed for free, but donations and sponsorships are accepted on behalf of both the GBPSR and IPPNW to continue their work preventing the threats of nuclear war and climate change. Find out more here
