Noah Bendix-Balgley, concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), is to join the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University School of Music in September 2013. The 28-year-old violinist (pictured), who has occupied the concertmaster’s chair since 2011, will coach student quartets. Bendix-Balgley was the first violinist of the Athlos Quartet from 2008 until 2011, and has also performed on tour with the Miró Quartet.

The School of Music has also announced that Andrés Cárdenes, who was the PSO's concertmaster from 1989 to 2010, has been appointed artistic director of orchestral studies. Cárdenes, 55, has been teaching at the school since 1989. He will succeed Ronald Zollman, who resigned from the position earlier this year.
