The Los Angeles-based Trio Caspar wins over $25,000 in prizes

The 53rd Fischoff Competition took place from 8–10 May at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, US.

In the junior string division, the gold medal went to the Alpaca Quartet from the Colburn School Music Academy in Los Angeles. It receives $2,500 and the opportunity to perform on National Public Radio’s From the Top as part of its Learning & Media Lab Fellowship program.

The silver medal and $2,000 were awarded to the Seattle-based Trio Veritas, along with the $500 Horszowski Trio Prize for Piano Ensemble, and the bronze medal and $1,500 to the Toronto-based Tornando Quartet. The Kenneth Geoffroy Memorial Award of $800 went to the Mishawaka-based Yimmy Quartet.

In the senior string division, the grand prize of $15,000 and a gold medal (which comes with $5,000) were awarded to the Los Angeles-based Trio Caspar. The ensemble will receive an additional $5,000 upon the completion of a tour in autumn this year. It also won the $1,500 Lift Every Voice prize for the best performance of a work by an historically underrepresented composer, performing Slang by Libby Larsen, as well as the $1,000 Horszowski Trio Prize for Piano Ensemble and an engagement with the Mimir Festival.

Trio Caspar comprises violinist and violist Jason Moon, clarinettist Andrea Caputo and pianist Bogang Hwang. It is currently enrolled at the Colburn School.

The silver medal and $4,000 were won by the Montreal-based Trio Timia, and the bronze medal and $3,000 by the Baltimore-based Setas Trio.

This year’s junior string division jury comprised Estelle Choi, Marian Hahn and Austin Hartman. The senior string division jury comprised Melvin Chen, Kirsten Docter, Meg Freivogel and Rhonda Rider, while the jurors for the Lift Every Voice Prize were Tony Baker, William Eddins and Adriana Linares.
