John Doig completed the Kelvingrove Park 5K walk, smashing his initial fundraising target of £2,000
John Doig, a retired violinist with Parkinson’s, completed the Kelvingrove Park 5K walk with the aid of a walker on Sunday 13 September.
Doig launched his GoFundMe ‘Meow-zart March’ campaign alongside the walk to raise funds for the Cat Action Trust 1977 Ayrshire Branch, from which he adopted his cat Ruah. He managed to raise £10,000, smashing his initial target of £2,000.
’This donation will enable the charity to continue its wonderful and tireless work rescuing vulnerable and abandoned cats and kittens,’ said Doig.
He continued: ’I have been overwhelmed by the extraordinary kindness and generosity shown to me from around the world – thank you all from the bottom of my heart. This six-week foray out of retirement has been quite an adventure!’
Flora Fleming, leader of the Cat Action Trust 1977 Ayrshire Branch, said: ’What John has raised for us will make such a difference to real-life individuals, not merely statistics. For me personally, what he has done for the branch touches me deeply.’
Doig, 68, of Killearn, Scotland, is a former leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Opera Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He was the first instrumental pupil enrolled at St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh, in 1972, after playing to Yehudi Menuhin.
He retired from the music profession at the age of 43, having been diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. He has spent his retirement fundraising for various charities.
