A recording by violinist Marie Wilson offers a tantalising glimpse into her playing, but the repertoire is unnamed
We need your help. We've been sent two recordings that were recently discovered by a correspondent on eBay. The recordings are marked as being by violinist Marie Wilson, from 1949 and 1950, but preliminary research has not discovered what the repertoire is. The recording quality of the acetates is not brilliant but do you recognise this music? Listen to the tracks here and tell us what you think it might be:
As you can hear in the recordings, Marie Wilson was a fabulous violinist, and one of the UK's leading orchestral players of the 1930s. She was the first female concertmaster to play the solo of Strauss's Ein Heldenleben and also led a quartet. Read more about her remarkable career in an article from The Strad, 1935, here.
