Violist Sara Kim has won the 2015 Felix Mendelssohn Prize. The 26-year-old Korean, who is currently studying at the Munich Hochschule für Musik und Theater, received €8,000. Second prize and €5,000 went to French violist Adrien La Marca, 25, while the third prize was split between  26-year-old Sejune Kim and Olof von Gagern, 25.

Born in 1988, Sara Kim began studying the violin at the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow, at the age of eight. She studied with Michael Vogler at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. She moved to the viola after graduating, and began a masters course with Friedemann Weigele, as well as with Hartmut Rohde at the University of the Arts. Since 2013 she has been solo violist at the Staatsorchester Braunschweig.

This year’s competition took place from 14–18 January at the Berlin University of the Arts. The total amount of prize money awarded was €60,000.
