Violist Delmar Stewart died on Saturday 12 August 2023, aged 73. He had performed a concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) hours before his passing.

Stewart was born on 28 September 1949. He joined the BSO in 1977 as a violist and was also a violin maker.

’BSM are devastated by the sudden passing of beloved violist Delmar Stewart, who played his last concert with us Saturday night,’ wrote Baltimore Symphony Musicians on social media. ’Delmar was a kind, gentle, and graceful presence who will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to work with him.

’Delmar played a viola he made himself in the BSO and helped a great many BSO string players with their instruments, as well as BSM parents of young string players. Delmar said he loved to make young people enjoy their instruments and want to practise. Our deepest sympathies to his family.’

A commemoration service will be held on Wednesday 16 August. In lieu of flowers, Stewart’s family have asked for contributions in his memory to be sent to Doctors Without Borders, online at donate.doctorswithoutborders.org
