I built this workshop in 1997, when I was running a residential carpentry business. I made a few instruments in the early 2000s for fun, and a friend who was apprenticing as a cello maker encouraged me to build a double bass. I was given a huge amount of input by a local violin maker and repairer, and teachers and students at the University of Oregon School of Music. By 2009 I was busy enough to focus on building basses full-time.
