The British violist was appointed to the faculty of the University of Washington aged just 26, before taking up numerous permanent and guest teaching positions elsewhere.
As a recording artist, she has championed neglected repertoire and has made the first recordings of numerous works.
A former president of the American Viola Society, she has also appeared as a chamber musician with the Tokyo and Julliard quartets.
