A familiar name from competition juries worldwide, Martin was born in Romania and at 19 came second at the 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition before winning gold in Indianapolis four years later.

Chamber music collaborations with Yehudi Menuhin, Martha Argerich and Radu Lupu followed alongside concerto appearances with international orchestras. Martin co-founded the Michelangelo Quartet in 2003.
