Boston's Museum of Fine Arts has put short recordings of violins
and other stringed instruments in its collection online. The audio
samples include a Bach Gavotte played on a 1641 Amati, a Purcell
Prelude on a G.B. Gabrielli of 1761 and a Prelude by Marin Marais
played on a French bass viola da gamba dating from around
1710.
The museum's website, www.mfa.org, also features recordings of an
English Stroh violin, a French trapezoidal-shaped violin, a Luis
and Clark carbon fibre violin, and a 300-year-old tromba
marina.
