The orchestra is expressly looking for a female candidate who will first perform with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra

The Vienna Philharmonic is advertising for a new concertmaster after auditions last year failed to produce a suitable candidate.

Joining the orchestra is a complicated process: the successful applicant will first complete a probation period of one or two years with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra; a jury will then decide whether to allow the violinist to become a permanent member of the Opera Orchestra, and only after three years in this role will he or she be allowed to apply for full membership of the private association of the Vienna Philharmonic .

Auditions are due to take place on 16 and 17 June and the deadline for applications is 21 April 2015. All rounds, apart from the last, take place behind a screen.

According to the orchestra’s announcement, ‘The Vienna State Opera aims at increasing the share of women and therefore calls for qualified women expressly to apply’.
