The death of Danish-Australian cellist Georg Pedersen has been announced on 3 September 2026. He was 80.
Pedersen was born on 1 April 1946 in Copenhagen. He studied with Paul Tortelier in Paris and Gregor Piatigorsky in Los Angeles, as well as chamber music with the Prague Quartet and the Vlack Quartet. He served as solo cellist with the Royal Danish Philharmonic and was founder of the Dania Quartet and the Copenhagen Chamber Soloists.
As a performer, he gave over 3000 concerts in 24 countries as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and principal orchestral player. He performed as guest principal cellist with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Pedersen performed with the Soloists of Australia, The Australian Piano Trio, The Sydney String Quartet, Flederman Ensemble and The Sydney Trio.
His notable recordings include all the Mozart piano trios alongside violinist Robert Ingram and pianist Gerard Willems on the Tall Poppies label in 1995, as well as Australian Cello with pianist David Bollard in 1998.
He took up the role of senior lecturer in cello at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, in 1985, following university positions in Auckland, Adelaide and Melbourne. Additionally, he gave recitals and masterclasses in Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore.
