Six cellists have progressed to the semi-final rounds taking place on 5 September

The cello division of the 2026 George Enescu International Competition is currently underway in Bucharest, Romania. Following the second round of the competition held from 2-3 September, six contestants have been chosen to progress to the semi-finals. They are:
Joshua Kováč, United States
Sanghyeok Park, South Korea
Seojin Jung, South Korea
Ziyang Zhao, China
Samuel Niederhauser, Switzerland
Goeunsol Heo, South Korea
The semi-finals will take place on 5 September at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. Contestants will perform Enescu’s Cello Sonata no.2 in C major op.26 with piano, as well as play and direct a Haydn concerto with chamber orchestra.
The final round of the cello division will take place on 7 September, with cellists competing for a first prize of €15,000. Meanwhile, the first rounds of the violin division of the competition take place from 4-6 September.
This year’s jury is presided by Arto Noras and comprises Claudio Bohórquez, Marin Cazacu, Enrico Dindo, Elena Dubinets, Frans Helmerson, Dan Prelipcean, Valentin Răduțiu and Inbal Segev.
