Malachy is the Principal double bassist with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has a particular interest in the fields of chamber music, contemporary music, and historically informed performance, and is active as a performer in all these areas.

His 2021 solo album The Irish Double Bass was described in the Journal of Music as “inviting examination of the instrument’s lyricism, its resonance, its agility, and its range”.
