The UK-based Kleio Quartet has announced the appointment of violist Jaren Ziegler and cellist Gerard Flotats to the ensemble. They join founding members Yume Fujise and Katherine Yoon, following the departure of violinist Juliette Roos and cellist Eliza Millett.

Ziegler takes over the viola position from Fujise, who will return to her original role as first violinist of the quartet.

The Kleio Quartet was formed in 2019 at the Seiji Ozawa International Chamber Academy. Since then, it has won the first prize and commission prize at the 2023 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition, the Freiburg and Walburger Prizes at the Jeunesses Musicales International course in 2024, and was selected for the BBC New Generation Artists scheme for 2024–26.

It holds a Senior Award from the Hattori Foundation and partook in the Kirckman Concert Society Young Artists scheme for 2023–24 and the Tunnell Trust’s Music Club Awards Scheme for 2022–23. It was recently appointed as resident quartet at the Royal Northern College of Music’s String Quartet Studio and has held residencies as part of the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam from 2023–26, at ProQuartet for the 2023–24 season, and as Britten-Pears Young Artists.

The Kleio Quartet celebrated the news on social media:

‘We are extremely thrilled to welcome Jaren Ziegler and Gerard Flotats to the quartet! We are over the moon and so excited for the journey we will take together and can’t wait to share this next chapter!

‘We also want to thank Juliette Roos and Eliza Millett for the wonderful memories, musicianship, and contributions they’ve made to our ensemble. Wishing them all the best for what’s ahead and know they will make a meaningful impact wherever they go and inspire those around them.’
