Nicola Benedetti is to make her New York Philharmonic subscription debut tomorrow in Szymanowski’s First Violin Concerto, replacing Janine Jansen, who has been advised by her doctor not to play for at least a week. The performances, led by Vladimir Jurowski in his Philharmonic conducting debut, take place on 21, 22 and 23 May, and also include selections from Prokofiev’s Cinderella.

Benedetti made her New York Philharmonic debut in September 2011 in ‘Andrea Bocelli Live in Central Park’, performing Lorin Maazel’s arrangement of Rodrigo’s ‘En Aranjuez con tu Amor’ conducted by music director Alan Gilbert.

Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto no. 1 is the work with which she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2004 and also featured on her debut recording with the London Symphony Orchestra for Deutsche Grammophon.

Earlier this year Benedetti spoke candidly about the pressures she faced as a 16-year-old following her much publicised win of the BBC Young Musician of the Year a decade ago.
