The Australian violinist receives NZD$40,000, a recording contract and performance opportunities
Suyeon Kang has been named the winner of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand. The 26-year-old Australian violinist, who performed Sibelius’s Concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia in the finals, receives NZD$40,000 (£18,000), a recording contract on the Atoll label, a concert tour of New Zealand and a personalised professional development programme. She also won the audience prize.
Second prize, worth NZD$10,000, went to Eunae Koh from South Korea, while third prize, worth NZD$5,000, went to Canada's Timmy Chooi.
Kang, who has studied at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg and Sydney Conservatorium, won Best performance of an encore work at the 2014 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and third prize at the 2014 International Music Competition in Bayreuth.
This year’s international jury included Pierre Amoyal, Young Uck Kim, Joseph Lin, Susie Park, Helene Pohl, Benjamin Schmid, Sergiu Schwartz and Dr Lloyd Williams.
