Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández is to be presented with the Rheingau Music Festival award, worth €15,000, on 18 July 2015. Donated by the Hessen Lottery in Germany, the career development prize has been given annually during the festival since 2009.

‘Personal vanity is alien to Ferrández,' commented the Rheingau jury. ‘He is an inspirational and expressive soloist who always places his skills at the service of the composer.’

The 24-year-old cellist has won prizes at the Paulo International Cello Competition in Finland, the Verbier and Kronberg Academy festivals, and at the Liezen International Competition in Austria. His first recording of Dvorák and Schumann cello concertos was praised in The Strad for its ‘huge emotion while still keeping his interpretation light and free from overindulgence’.
