The musician and pedagogue is also named Blair School of Music Joachim Professor of Violin
The Blair School of Music, part of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, has appointed Stephen Miahky as its Joseph Joachim Professor of Violin. The position includes the role of first violin of the School’s resident Blair String Quartet. Miahky replaces long-serving violinist Christian Teal, who is retiring after 42 years.
‘Steve Miahky is a consummate artist,’ said Blair School Dean Mark Wait. ‘When he came to Vanderbilt to interview, he taught a masterclass of penetrating insight, gave a stylistically diverse solo recital that included one of the finest performances of a contemporary work I’ve ever heard, and demonstrated assured leadership in working with the other members of the Blair String Quartet.’
Miahky currently serves on the faculty of Bowling Green State
University in Ohio, and has previously been a member of staff at
Ohio University and Cornell University. He has been on the faculty
of the Montecito Music Festival in Santa Barbara since 2011, and
received his D.M.A. from Rutgers University in 2009. A prolific
chamber and recital performer, Miahky is a particular champion of
contemporary music and has recorded world-premiere recordings for
Naxos, Albany and AMP Records.
