Violin professor Oleg Pokhanovski, 55, has been charged with sexual exploitation and sexual assault of a then-15-year-old student. The girl took private lessons with him at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, from December 2007 to March 2010.

It is alleged that grooming began during these lessons and led to sexual assault happening off campus. Reports indicate that the girl broke off the relationship, though the professor tried to reinitiate contact by repeatedly emailing her.

The student reported the incident in February in another jurisdiction, who contacted Winnipeg investigators. On 29 July Pokhanovski turned himself in at Winnipeg police headquarters, where he was consequently arrested.

The University of Manitoba is aware of the charges. On 8 August, a spokesperson said in a statement: ’We take this matter very seriously and are cooperating fully with the Winnipeg Police Service. The accused has been placed on leave.’

Regarding Oleg Pokhanovski’s current employment status, the school said: ’We are limited under privacy legislation in what we can share regarding his employment situation. We can confirm that he is on leave and that he will not be attending campus, performing any university responsibilities, or contacting members of the UM community.’

Pokhanovski is a graduate of the Moscow State Conservatory of Music. He later immigrated to the US, where he studied at the Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music.
