The violist’s latest recording is released on 23 August
In the July 2019 issue of The Strad, Antoine Tamestit discusses his new recording of Bach’s three sonatas written for the viola da gamba. ’I find them to be closest to the viola,’ he says. ’They cover almost the same register, and even employ the same alto clef.’ Playing sonatas written for a different instrument, though, had its challenges: one has to deal with the contrapuntal writing that treats the viola as one of three equal parts. ‘Most of the time, the viola is either the upper or middle voice,’ Tamestit explains, ‘but occasionally it becomes the bass, and everything happens so fast that often you have to change roles from one note to the next, and seamlessly too.’
The CD is released on 23 August and we have five copies to give away. For your chance to win, simply click here to submit your details.
