In The Strad’s February 2020 issue, the four members of the Ébène Quartet discuss their mammoth Beethoven around the World tour ‘Although Beethoven was German, he could have been so many other nationalities and living at another time, says violinist Gabriel Le Magadure. ’With the idea of universalism irrigating his music so much, we wanted to test it with different cultures in our time. Maybe he isn’t able to speak 200 years later to Maoris or Kenyans or Brazilians, but perhaps we can serve his will.’
During the tour, all the quartets have been recorded live for the Ébène’s long-standing label Erato, with each of seven discs set down in a different country and the entire box set due for release in March.
