‘This is not bombastic Schubert. It is a gentle piece and it’s not about showing off - it’s about sharing music between friends’

ViolistPaul Neubauer speaks about performing the second and third movements of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata to The Strad, and performs the work in the video above in an arrangement for viola and orchestra with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Simca Heled in 1998.

Neubauer continues The Strad’s marked-up sheet music series in association with Henle Verlag with the second and third movements of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata in the July 2017 issue – giving bowings, fingerings and ideas for interpretation.
