Pekka Kuusisto has been named the newest artistic partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota. The Finnish violinist, whose tenure begins in September 2016, joins current associates, pianist Jeremy Denk, clarinettist Martin Fröst and violinists Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Thomas Zehetmair.

‘One might ask if there aren’t enough Finns in Minnesota already, but fortunately for me, the SPCO doesn’t seem to think so,’ said Kuusisto. ‘I’ve already had some ecstatic times with them, and the opportunity to explore possible (and maybe also impossible) new ways of working and performing with the orchestra gives me reindeer-bumps. Good times!’

Known for his experimental approach and unorthodox interpretations, Kuusisto regularly works with contemporary composers and frequently directs ensembles from the violin. He will next direct SPCO in April 2016 in a programme of contemporary works, movements from Haydn’s Symphony no. 88 and Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 5.

Kuusisto was The Strad's July 2012 cover star, speaking about his adventures in sound and taking risks in concert.
