The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has appointed South Korean-born Yoonshin Song as its new concertmaster. The 30-year-old will join the orchestra this September, becoming its first new concertmaster for 24 years. Kimberly Kaloyanides Kennedy has been serving as acting concertmaster since May 2011, when Emmanuelle Boisvert left after 23 years as concertmaster to join the Dallas Symphony.

Song, a member of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra, studied with Donald Weilerstein, Robert Mann and Glenn Dicterow. She has been a prizewinner at competitions in the US, Italy, Germany, Poland and South Korea. As a soloist she has performed with orchestras including the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic and the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. She will make her solo debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra next May, performing the Brahms Concerto.
