The British artist receives the award 'in recognition of his commitment to, and belief in Wigmore Hall and in everything that it represents'
British cellist Steven Isserlis has been awarded the Wigmore Medal 'in recognition of his commitment to, and belief in Wigmore Hall and in everything that it represents'. The presentation took place at the London concert venue earlier this month, following a performance by Isserlis and Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon.
'I have been playing at the Wigmore Hall for more years than I care to remember!' said Isserlis. 'Over the years, I have come to consider it as my musical home; I love it for its acoustics, for its history, and above all for the unique atmosphere that inspires us all every time we play there.'
'Since his debut in 1977, Steven has presented a number of series at the Hall, charming his audience into sampling unknown or neglected composers with his infectious enthusiasm, or bringing a fresh approach to the established repertoire,' said Wigmore Hall director John Gilhooly. 'Today he is acclaimed worldwide and enjoys a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, author and broadcaster. We are thrilled to present him with this medal.'
Isserlis is the first cellist to receive the Wigmore Medal, which was launched in 2007. Previous recipients include Sir András Schiff, Thomas Quasthoff, Menahem Pressler and Dame Felicity Lott.
